Happy Hump Day Fellow Breeders!
This is the first of several upcoming Connections where I’ll tell you a little bit about some specific breedables and what inspired their creation. Today, I’m spotlighting the Fu K-9s.
What is a Fu Dog?
Chinese or Imperial Guardian Lions, are a strong feng shui symbol of power and protection. They date back to the Han dynasty (206 BC – AD 220). Typically made of stone, Fu Dogs were traditionally placed in front of Imperial palaces, tombs, government offices, temples, and the homes of government officials and the wealthy to guard against negative energy.
Although actually lions, their strong resemblance with the Chow Chow and Shih Tzu, led these figures to be called Fu/Foo Dogs in English. Fu may be translated from Chinese to mean “prosperity”.
Fu Dogs are meant to be paired with each having their own symbolic detail. The premise behind the symbolism is that the female (yin) protects the people dwelling inside the home, while the male (yang) protects the structure itself. You can tell which is which by examining what’s beneath the paws: the male dog holds a ball (representing supremacy over the world); the female dog restrains a playful cub on its back (representing nurture).
